KBL Playoff Race Guide
A magic number counts down to a team clinching a goal — first place, a specific seed, or a playoff spot. It drops by one every time that team wins, or a rival loses. Once it hits zero, the rival can't catch up even by winning every remaining game. In short: it's how many combined wins (by this team) and losses (by the rival) are still needed.
KBL teams play 54 games each. Say Team A is 30-20 (4 games left) and Team B is 26-24 (4 games left). If B wins out, B finishes at most 30-24. A only needs 31 wins to be unreachable — one more win, so A's magic number is 1. The formula: 54 + 1 - A's wins - B's losses = 55 - 30 - 24 = 1.
A magic number of 1 means "A wins once, or B loses once, and it's over."
Basketball games that are tied after regulation go to overtime, so every game produces a winner and a loser. That means the magic number formula works directly off win-loss records with no adjustment for ties, unlike sports where draws are possible.
If the magic number is bigger than the team's remaining games, winning out alone isn't enough — some help from rivals losing is also required. Tiebreaker rules aren't factored in, so treat this as a reference alongside KBL's official standings.
