The V-League Points System and How Magic Numbers Work

Why can a team with more wins rank lower?

The V-League uses FIVB's bonus-point system. Winning 3-0 or 3-1 earns 3 points; winning a tight 3-2 earns only 2; even a 2-3 loss earns 1 point (a 0-3 or 1-3 loss earns 0). The two teams' points from a single match always add up to 3. So a team that wins mostly 3-0/3-1 can end up with more points than a team with the same or even more wins that mostly came via 3-2 thrillers โ€” and since the table is sorted by points, that can put the "more wins" team lower in the standings.

Magic numbers here are counted in points, not games

This site's magic number is the number of additional points a team needs to guarantee a given finish, assuming the worst case: the chasing team wins every remaining match by the maximum (3 points each). If a rival has 5 games left, their ceiling is +15 points. Once your points total already exceeds "that rival's current points + 15," they're mathematically locked out (magic number 0) โ€” otherwise you still need the difference.

A quick example

Say Team A has 60 points (6 games left) and Team B has 50 points (6 games left). If B sweeps every remaining match 3-0, B tops out at 50 + 18 = 68. Once A reaches 69, B can no longer catch up no matter what โ€” so A's magic number against B is 9 (= 69 - 60). Those 9 points can come from A's own results, or from B simply not winning every set along the way.

Reading the numbers

An exact points tie is broken by separate rules (win count, set ratio, etc.), so this site never assumes a tie is already decided โ€” it always computes the conservative case. Check KOVO's official rules and schedule for anything that matters in practice.
